In its earliest days, Denmark was the home of Viking raiders, and in more recent times, it evolved into a major power in northern Europe. Now, it has become a prosperous, modern country that is doing its part to contribute to the continent’s political and economic unity and the success of the European Union.

Every April, when the days grow longer and the weather starts to warm up, Denmark’s tourist season begins anew. Those in the know will tell you that May or June is a great time to visit, with the fields lush with flowers and the landscape painted a vibrant green, and you still have an opportunity to stay ahead of the yearly “tourist rush.” The fall, a time when the countryside turns a rich red, brown, and yellow, can also be quite beautiful to see.

The tourist season peaks in July and August, the streets are alive with activity, you can relax on the beach or attend an open-air concert, and tourist sites, including museums, offer longer opening hours as well. If you schedule your vacation for the last two weeks of August, you will also discover that the country is less crowded at that time.

With its many islands and about 7,300 kilometers of coastline, which varies from sandy beaches to gentle coves, Denmark provides visitors with countless opportunities for boating, and fishing on the open seas, protected seas, and calm-water fjords. In addition, its many lakes and streams are well-stocked with trout, perch, and pike, while the sea abounds with mackerel, trout, and cod—an indication of the country’s rich fishing tradition.

Between Denmark’s major cities, Copenhagen, Arhus, Odense, Aalborg and Frederiksberg, domestic air travel is quite convenient, and you will also find that, for certain flights, heavily discounted fares are available. Regional buses, which can be used for connecting with trains, also service many areas. The train system is very reliable, and it offers both reasonable fares and convenient schedules. If you decide to rent a car, you will be required to drive on the right side of the road while carrying a warning triangle and the use of seat belts is mandatory. You will find that cycling can be done with ease in town and from one town to another because a network of bike paths connects the country, and the ferry system links all of the country’s populated islands as well.

Denmark is well known for its picturesque towns and villages, its historic monuments and castles, and its peaceful valleys and rolling hills. They will provide a scenic backdrop for your visit, including vast areas of heath land, cool, shady forests, its remarkable Lake District, and white cliffs reminiscent of Dover. You will also discover that every island you visit on your journey has its own special attractions.
