Settled about 8500 BCE by nomads, Finland had a history similarly to other Nordic countries. Although it was originally populated by hunter-gatherers, the bronze and iron ages brought agriculture, contact with other cultures, and industry. However, in the 19th century the area became part of the growing Russian empire, only to declare independence in 1908. In North Finland, the sun does not set in the summer for over 70 days. In the winter, it does not rise for over 50. This makes the destination a literal bright spot for those who want to see the sun at night.

Old Rauma, which just became part of UNESCO's world heritage list, is one of the oldest Finnish harbor towns that are rich with history and beauty. Of note are the architecturally significant buildings, 15th century church, and skilled craftspeople. Other architectural wonders, castles, draw visitors to the country, which also boasts museums and other historical attractions. Helsinki, the country's capital, remains a popular destination because of the juxtaposition of modern entertainment, nature, and historical importance. The industrial Tampere and the upscale Turku are also popular cities in the country.
